This beautiful bastide founded in 1275 on a promontory takes its name from mons fortis which means "Fortified Mountain". Its founder, the Count of Armagnac Géraud V, decided to call it that because of its eminently strategic geographical position. Today, the village offers a central covered market hall from 1852, galleries, sublime old stone and half-timbered houses, but also the impressive 13th century church of Saint-Clément. The old ramparts run around the edge of the village and you can discover the washhouse, watering place and fountain. The poet Guillaume du Bartas (1544-1590) was born in the town.
