Petite-Rosselle shares much of its history with the town of Grande-Rosselle. The town of Rosselle was founded in 1290 and separated into two separate communes in 1326. The two towns are separated by a river, the Rosselle. The coal basin around Saint-Avold and Forbach is also known as the Pays de Rosselle, named after the commune of Petite-Rosselle, which is home to the famous Coal Basin Museum, a testimony to the region's important mining past. The museum has recently been renovated, allowing visitors to experience the coalfields as if they were there. The life-size mine.
