West of Metz, Gravelotte bears the scars of a heavy past. You'll hear it said: "ça tombe comme à Gravelotte", in reference to the terrible fighting of the 1870 war. This small town has a rich and eventful history. It was destroyed and rebuilt twice, once in the 14th century and again during the Second World War. Today, it attracts visitors with its Museum of the 1870 War and the Annexation (of Alsace-Moselle, which lasted from 1871 to 1919). A number of local shops offer a variety of mirabelle plums and 100% Arabica hand-roasted coffees.
