The history of Dieuze, "Duosa Villa", is linked to that of its salt springs, exploited since Gallo-Roman times. Dieuze was a constant challenge for the bishops of Metz, the dukes of Lorraine, and then for the king himself. The saltworks became royal in 1737, and the town the most important production unit in the whole kingdom. Salt extraction ceased in 1973 and, in the meantime, Dieuze was annexed to the German Reich, suffering heavy damage during the Battle of Metz. Today, Dieuze remains a charming salt town, where you can soak up the richness of its singular heritage as you stroll around.
