Ad Duodecimum, or "at the twelfth milestone" on the road from Metz to Strasbourg: the name Delme comes from the Gallo-Roman era, when the twelve Gallic leagues were romanized into duodecim. Ideally situated between Metz and Nancy (30 and 35 km respectively from the two major cities of Lorraine), Delme owes its renown above all to its synagogue, a veritable jewel, now a museum of contemporary art. The town owes this monument to the large Jewish community that settled here in the 17th century, after the town came into the possession of Louis XIV, mainly for the horse trade.
