Creutzwald has definitively turned the page on coal. Today, the town has strengthened its position at the heart of Europe thanks to a junction between the French and German motorway systems. The creation of a eurozone is stimulating the development of high value-added tertiary activities. A border town with Germany, Creutzwald (Kreuz meaning cross in German) takes its name from the cross erected by a father of the Bouzonville abbey, on the site of the present-day church. Its origins date back to the early 17th century. Three industries contributed to the town's development: iron, glass and coal.
