It was in the forest that the writer Alain Fournier, famous author of Grand Meaulnes, lieutenant of 288 th RI, disappeared on September 22, 1914, then aged 27 years only. His body was discovered in a mass grave where he had been thrown by the Germans. Identified in November 1991, it has been based since the military cemetery of Saint-Rémy-la-Calonne. A monument is erected on the site, as a flame, in memory of these 21 young soldiers who died and so quickly buried. The necropolis is covered by a glass dome. It is in those same surroundings that Louis Pergaud, the author of Pimples war, disappeared.
