For many years, an important railroad line ran through this village. It stands out for its exceptional archaeological wealth. It is world-famous for its Rochedane rock shelter, which revealed treasures now on display in the Besançon and Montbéliard museums: 77 engraved pebbles and 122 painted pebbles dating from 11,000 to 9,500 years ago. There is also furniture from the Magdalenian period and a Mesolithic engraving. It is also said that this shelter was the refuge of the fairy Arie and her donkey Marion. Much less cheerful, Pont-de-Roide is home to Jules Bonnot, the anarchist whose notorious gang distinguished itself through murder and robbery.
