Clefmont is a small medieval village to visit. First, for its geographical location, as it grows on a thorn and embraces the entire valley of the Meuse, offering superb views. Secondly, because it feeds on a historical and feudal past. You can walk on the streets to admire his old houses, the remains of his strong castle. This is another village that was important in the Middle Ages. His castle, built at the end of Xe, was imposing; surrounded by ditches, with a very high portal, a lift bridge and a castral chapel. Clefmont was formed and developed around this fortress (or «clear mountain»). His seigneury was the most powerful of Bassigny, his lords - like the first and most famous of them, Simon I - gave much to the religious authorities, and thus helped to build the abbeys of Morimond, Creête, Belfays, Esnouvelles's Ordanderie… The Saint-Thiébaut church of the eleventh century, built shortly after the canonization of the saint, upon request by Simon I, is to be seen for its Romanesque style. The lords were buried there and you will see their graves. Clefmont is one of the resorts of the national haras, the horses are high in its pastures and every year in July takes place the horse festival. Nearby, Vroncourt, Louise Michel homeland, Choiseul and its witness butte… If you want more information, there is a tourist point on the Place de la Mairie (tel) 03 25 31 39 17.
