Don Miguel de Mañara, a Sevillian nobleman, had this hospice built for the destitute. As a patron of artists, he called on Murillo and Valdés Leal to decorate the chapel on the themes chosen during his lifetime: hunger, thirst and death. The chapel's high altar and its walls, which are covered with paintings by the two great artists of the Golden Age, have made the hospice famous. The white and red façade of the chapel is decorated with tiles attributed to Murillo.

There is a beautiful place near the cathedral, enliven by jacarandes from South America, offering beautiful purple flowers. This restored fortress of the th century has beautiful courtyards, gardens and Arab baths and has no less than towers, the best preserved being those of the En and the Octagonal. In 1264, during the re-conquest of the city by Alphonse X the Wise, the tower of the En was transformed into a royal residence and the mosque became the chapel Santa María la Real. Since its turn, the Palacio Villavicencio offers a good view of the city. recently restored, it contains a oscura oscura (dark room), which allows to perfect the panoramic vision of the city, always interesting to discover Jerez.

ROMAN THEATRE OF MALAGA

Ancient monuments
4.3/5
8 reviews

It is located at the foot of the hill where the two fortresses of Malaga, the Alcazaba and the castle of Gibralfaro are located. Built in the era of Auguste, this Roman theatre was used until the th century. But with the arrival of the Arabs, he served as a career for new constructions, especially for the Alcazaba where many capitals and drums of Roman columns came from this theatre. It was during the landscaping of the garden adjoining the house of culture that was discovered in 1951, the house was destroyed when archaeologists realized the importance of their discovery. Even if the excavations have not yet been completed, almost all the elements of the theatre have been updated (entrance to the proscenium or scene, area of the orchestra, gateway, etc.). And he is now entitled to receive theatre performances that usually take place in the summer in an exceptional environment. We will also visit its interpretation centre, which will be able to know the life and customs of Des Romana.

Hemmed in a glass envelope, this museum, inaugurated in March 2011, presents the remains discovered on the site during the pre-construction work of the mushrooms at the Mirador Metropol Parasol. A large part dates from the Roman era (from the first to the century) when Seville was still called Hispalis; from the Muslim era remains the remains of a almohade house (dated th and th centuries). A small visit (about 30 minutes) from the former quoted mentioned before leaving to Italica, for more material.

PLAZA DE TOROS DE LA MALAGUETA (BULLRING)

Monuments to visit
4.4/5
5 reviews

Rather classical, they date from the th century and present the Taurin museum Antonio Ordónez. The first bullring of the city were built at the end of the th century near the convent of the. They were in wood, as were the many following, in the heart of a neighbourhood close to the harbour, where there were wine warehouses of the famous Heredia society. Historians report that this taurin building was destroyed for fear of fire. Plazas built afterwards did not, however, make a long fire. In 1849, the new arrival was installed near the convent of San Francisco, now extinct. The arenas were stone and could accommodate 12 000 spectators, and their owner demolished them in 1864 for dark political reasons. A new plaza is built, near the sea, with the possibility of welcoming more than 9 000 spectators, this time is the right one, the plaza de la Malagueta was born, and opened in 1876, with a bullfighting of Murube for Antonio Carmona El Gordito, and Lagartijo, the stars of the moment.

ALCAZABA

Military monuments
4.2/5
5 reviews

It is the main tourist attraction of Almería. After the Alhambra of Granada, it is the largest of the citadels built by the Arabs in the Iberian Peninsula and probably one of the most beautiful Andalusian fortresses because of its construction and its location on a hill from where you can superbly overlook the whole city, the medina and the modest district of La Chanca with its colourful facades. Looking at the Mediterranean horizon from the towers, we can better understand why the city became the most important sea exit from Al-Andalus. The Alcazaba was built by Abd al-Rahman III in 955, transformed and enlarged by Al-Mansur and then by Hayran, the first independent Emir of Almeria. It has three enclosures, two of Muslim design and a third of Christian origin. It was abandoned in the 19th century and restored in 1950. The visit of the first enclosure allows you to cross a whole area of very pleasant gardens with fragrant plants. In total, the tour includes 19 points that will introduce you to the Casa del Alcalde, built at the beginning of the 20th century by Prieto Moreno as a romantic tribute to the Alhambra, as well as Muslim casas reconstructed to evoke their domestic aspect and permanent exhibition sites. Both are located in the second enclosure and next to it you will find something to refresh yourself. Allow two hours for this visit. It can be completed by an ascent to the hillside of San Cristobal, the best viewpoint in the city.

Surrounding the entire city, they were intended to protect it from both land and sea attacks. They were partially destroyed at the beginning of the century. The famous Puertas de Tierra are still visible: these towers were built between 1639 and the mid-18th century. Vauban, who created the defensive system of Cádiz, reinforced it with several forts and bastions, some of which can still be seen (the castles of San Sebastián and Santa Catalina, the latter of which can be visited). Even today, parks and gardens enhance the stroll along the seafront with the Parque del Genovés or the Alameda Apodaca.

Located 300 metres from City Hall, these underground shelters were used as shelters in 1936 and 1937 during the Spanish Civil War. Designed by architect Guillermo Langle Rubio, they are 9 metres deep and represent a total of 4.5 km of underground circuits, of which about 1 km has been recovered. The visit shows different spaces: the shop, the Guillero Langle refuge and the surgical space with all the instruments of the time. Today, they are the largest shelters of this type open to the public throughout Europe.

Situated on a cliff facing El Bajoncillo beach, this small palace was built in the th century in neo-mudéjar style, a flourishing architectural style in Spain of the late th century. Renovated and reopened in 2014, it now became an emblematic part of Torremolinos. The building has two floors, the ground floor being the place of accommodation with rooms, office, dining room, kitchen, and above all an interior decoration imitating that of the Alhambra of Granada. On the first floor, it serves as a cross towards the coast. On the outside you will notice its two side towers as well as its main portico. Built at the request of Antonio Navajas, enriched in the culture of sugar cane, this Casa sheltered three generations of the Navajas family before becoming municipal heritage in 2000.

ARCHAEOLOGICAL AND ETHNOLOGICAL MUSEUM

After eight years of closure, six years of work, this museum has just opened its doors in May 2018. This required an investment of € 640 000 from the Spanish Ministry of Culture and the Andalusia junta. Located in the House of Castril, a renaissance palace of the sixteenth century, it proposes to show the daily life of the various societies that inhabited Granada. Through three rooms and a patio, a course is proposed at a semi-permanent exhibition presenting nearly 120 pieces constituting the "treasure" of this museum. This will include the tooth of Orce, a tooth that belonged to a child born more than 1.4 million years ago, making it the oldest human being found in Europe. Starting from this object, we will go back to the fifteenth century to reach the astrolabe of Ibn Zawel, dating back to 1481. An instrument of navigation which in the Muslim world was also used to exercise religious practice by allowing to know exactly the hours of prayer, the beginning of Ramadan or the appropriate position to pray towards Mecca. To note, a very nice view on the Alhambra from the patio.

Dating from the 11th century, these Moorish baths are among the oldest and best preserved in Spain and constitute one of the oldest structures in Muslim Granada. They consist of several rooms reproducing the layout of Roman baths: entrance courtyard, vestibule, cold room, central room, and hot room. The vaults with octagonal star-shaped dormers and the arcades of the last rooms, which are decorated with Roman, Visigoth or Caliphate capitals, are noteworthy.

Located on Plaza Vieja, or Plaza de la Constitución, whose final appearance dates back to the middle of the 19th century, this building was built in 1899. Its cream and pink facade is charming. Access, strongly recommended, is via a small street or passages in arcades. In the centre, we will find the monument to the martyrs of freedom, an obelisk dedicated to the 24 liberals fighting against the despotism of Fernando VII and shot on 24 August 1824. If you spend this day there, you will be surprised to hear the Marseillaise accompany this commemoration.
