Inaugurated in 1864, the theatre was devastated by fire five years later. Once restored in 1878, the first performance given there was an opera by Bellini. Note the façade decorated with busts of Neapolitan musicians (Scarlatti, Pergolesi). The horseshoe-shaped interior houses the dressing rooms on six levels one on top of the other. The fresco on the vault, The Triumph of Music, pays homage to Bellini.
