BACKGROUND BEACH GĦADIR

Natural Crafts

The coastline along the districts of Sliema and St Julian's offers many rocky walls that have been built to allow you to take a dip. Sometimes with Valletta as a backdrop, just a stone's throw from the traffic. This beach has the peculiarity of being watched over by lifeguards and the great originality of this rocky part is that it preserves old saltworks that have been converted into natural swimming pools. It is really worth the detour and the photo. Other spots in Sliema: Fort Tigné, Qui si-Sana, Għar id-Dud and Exiles.

TA FRA BEN'S BEACH

Natural Crafts

A very popular rocky beach in the north of Malta. Scuba divers make it one of their favorite spots, and end-of-day barbecues are festive. The bay and its clear waters will delight snorkelers, although beware of the depth of the water (7-8 meters) and the rocky walls, which can hurt children if they come into contact with the strong current. Many boats drop anchor here, their zone clearly marked by buoys. Parasols and deckchairs available for hire. A late evening at the Café del Mar, with its idyllic sunset, will convince you to put your bags down.

TA PEPPI - MALTESE STONE CARVINGS

Art gallery exhibition space foundation and cultural center

You've seen them everywhere, these rounded, streamlined, often feminine sculptures, carved from globigerine, the beautiful local stone. Here's your chance to meet Joe Xuereb, copied but never equalled by so many craftsmen today! 30 years ago, Joe was trying to reproduce a Neolithic statue found in a temple. This was to be followed by a lot of work, a continuous flirtation with the objects found on the island by archaeologists, until he created an obvious artistic identity, today propelled on the international scene where he is nicknamed the "Gozitan Botero"! Joe will be delighted to open the doors of his studio, 100 m from the village church, free of charge. Don't hesitate for a second, especially as Joe speaks excellent French!

PÉNINSULE DE MARFA

Natural Crafts

In this place, wilder and more relaxing than the rest of the north coast, you can, like the Maltese, find a secluded picnic spot between low walls, cacti and abundant low vegetation.

Dahlet ix-Xilep is the northernmost point of Marfa, and the straight road leads directly to it. It offers a fine view of the entire north coast, from Mellieha to the Hilton Tower in St Julian's. The wind sometimes blows very hard. A chapel and a small white statue of the Madonna soften the wild aspect of the place.

At Ahrax Point, the White Tower keeps watch. It's one of the Redin towers built along the north coast on the model of the Wignacourt tower in St Paul's Bay.

Between Ahrax and Cirkewwa are a succession of sandy beaches, much loved by the Maltese but little known to tourists. Maltese families come here for picnics. Some have their own boats or cabins, more or less well equipped. They almost form a small village around Armier Bay, gaining ground on the hillside and the pretty mosaic of walled terraced cultivations.

A little further back towards Cirkewwa is Little Armier. This is a busier place. Here you'll find snack bars with lido on the water's edge. Each brightens up the site with its colorful umbrellas. The beach here is half sand, half rock, the water is crystal-clear and the view over Gozo unobstructed. Volleyball and water sports are available on site, as well as loungers on fine sand under imported palm trees. These beaches are very popular at weekends.

SAINTE-THÉRÈSE CHURCH

Religious buildings

The very recent Sainte-Thérèse church, with its flying saucer appearance, has a modernity designed to impress, despite a slightly artisanal feel. Although originally dedicated to Saint Alphonsus, the local population continues to call it Sainte-Thérèse due to the presence of an urn bearing her effigy.

The old building was damaged by a lightning strike in 1959. The new one is now one of the island's most popular places of worship.
