It is a museum that traces life in the region from prehistoric times to the present day. All the objects found in the caves are collected, archived and displayed here. This is where Veronika Deseniška, the second wife of Friderik II of Celje, hid to escape abuse. A gigantic ice cave with an entrance measuring only 30 m x 20 m. Of course, the place had an essential function in previous centuries because it served as a giant refrigerator for the local population to avoid winter food shortages.

An ethnological monument from the end of the 19th century that commemorates the work and memory of the writer. Ciril Kosmač is a well-known figure in Slovenian literature. His French-language book Une journée de printemps was a great success in the 1950s. He recounts his youthful memories that resurface on his return to his native land after fifteen years of exile, with an ease with words reminiscent of Marcel Proust. In his childhood home we find his desk and drafts of his early writings.

The monastery was built on the slope at the end of the valley. The construction was commissioned by Hans Tattenbach in 1550. In 1663, the castle was transformed into a monastery for the monks of the order of St. Paul of Lepoglava from Croatia. In the last decades, the monastery was run by the Friars Minor. The monks were engaged in medicine and pharmacy and like many other orders, also in agriculture and viticulture. The medicinal herb garden can be admired here.

During the Second World War, a 1,300 m long tunnel was built under the old town to protect the population from Allied bombing. You can visit the labyrinth in an unusual way, as occasional exhibitions are held here. In two permanent exhibitions you can see minerals, fossils and a reconstruction of the World War II bunker, in which you can even experience the simulation of an air raid.

Housed in a bourgeois villa in the town centre, the National Liberation Museum offers visitors a glimpse of the Maribor of the Second World War through a collection of archival objects. We discover or rediscover the different stages through which the population of north-eastern Slovenia went: Nazi occupation, Germanisation of the population, organisation of the resistance from 1941 to the end of the war. Ajdovska Cave is an ancient prehistoric site where archaeologists have found many objects of daily life dating back to the Bronze Age. It allowed its inhabitants to protect themselves from external dangers. The cave has undergone several human occupations over the centuries, serving as a food reserve during periods of famine or harsh winters. It continues to provide essential shelter for the large local bat population.

Erected at the end of the ^19th century and dedicated to higher education in 1919, the building played a symbolic role in 1991, when the country's independence was proclaimed. It was also used to celebrate the country's accession to the European Union in 2004. To the south-east of the university, two street names, Židovska steza and Židovska ulica, bear witness to the Jewish presence in the Middle Ages. Jews arrived here in the early ^14th century and lived here until 1515, when they were expelled by Emperor Maximilian.

A few kilometres from Bohinjska Bistrica there is a picturesque waterfall on a farm. This charming museum will give you an overview of the last two millennia of world pharmacy, with a special emphasis on its development on Slovenian territory. It contains more than 2,000 exhibits: pharmacy equipment from the 18th and 19th centuries, a collection of decorated ceramic vessels for storing medicines, a pharmacy, an alchemy laboratory, a collection of mortars, as well as a number of period scales and weights.

Nature lovers are attracted to the Logar Valley because of its unspoilt environment and many natural attractions. This unique valley was declared a landscape park in 1987. It contains more than 43 natural wonders, and the perimeter of the park includes Natura 2000 areas and other areas of important ecological character. Its origins remain largely unknown, but it is known that the bridge has existed for more than a millennium. Rebuilt in 1750, the Napoleonov Most is a bridge offering a breathtaking view of the beautiful turquoise blue river Soča. Crossing the Vršič Pass leads to the Primorska region (upper Soča Valley from Kranjska Gora and then Bovec). Count 50 hairpin bends and 25 km before you reach Trenta and the valley of the same name. In winter, with the closure of the Vršič Pass, the inhabitants of the valley must reach Tarvisio in Italy by crossing the border at Predel and then cross the border a second time at Rateče before they can reach Kranjska Gora. The turns (numbered) are counted from Kranjska Gora.

Turn 48. Julius Kugy Memorial. He was an enlightened mountaineer and amateur botanist who climbed most of the peaks of the Julian Alps and wrote six books. At the end of the 19th century, this attracted many Austrians and the locals became guides.

Turn 49. On the right, the road leads to the source of the Soča (Izvir Soča), a 15-minute walk from the hostel with good shoes. This is where the journey from the Soča to the Adriatic begins.

This is a popular hiking destination in the vicinity of the small town of Kamnik, located at an altitude of 826 m above sea level. It is the site of the Gothic church of Saints Primus and Felicia, a small bistro and the quaint little church of St. Peter, which stands just at the top of the hill and offers a stunning view of the surrounding hills and the Ljubljana basin at its feet. It's a great place to plan a picnic!

The climb is steep from the city centre. However, the difference in altitude makes it possible to reach this church at the top of a hill in about thirty minutes. When the weather is mild, the view of Idrija and the surrounding mountains invites contemplation. Škofja Loka, together with the Selška and Poljanska Valley, is a picturesque medieval place where the Passion performance is held, which is included in the UNESCO list of intangible cultural heritage. Straža (translate: sentinel). It is the highest point closest to the city. In fact, the inhabitants lit a fire there to warn the neighbours of the arrival of the Turkish enemy. Thus, from hill to hill, smoke messages were used as SMS at the time. Today, you can ski there and admire the dominant view of the lake from the hostel "Kuća na Straži" or climb the trees, toboggan... Be careful it is closed in the off-season, but nothing prevents a wonderful walk because it is only at 642 meters altitude.

Without falling into excessive exploitation, endangered medicinal plants grow inside a garden in their natural habitat. Visitors need to be aware of their benefits, but most importantly, they need to see how easy it is to grow them in their vegetable gardens. That is why a botanical garden with nearly 200 species of medicinal plants with descriptions of their virtues and properties is being established.

On the second floor of the south tower of the monastery there is a smaller room, formerly called "the bishop's room". The priests of old used it mainly as a lounge for distinguished guests. In this room lived the bishop (writer, poet, lawyer, educator, counsellor) Anton Martin Slomšek when he came to visit the high priest benefactor Prašnikarju. The Friars Minor renamed this room Bláženi Anton Martin Slomšek and arranged it for small events such as weddings and seminars.

The church is not open for sightseeing. However, during special events, it is possible to visit it. The Križanke was the seat of the order of the Teutonic Knights in the mid-13th century. It was the only church of this order on Slovenian soil. Only a few polished elements remain from their church, including the famous relief of the Krakovska Madonna (Mary on the Throne), which adorned the main portal, built in 1270 and kept in the National Gallery

From 1915 to 1917, the regions of Upper Posočje, Goriška Brda and Krast were part of the Soča Front. Soldiers of several nationalities fought, suffered and died there. Several remains of this period have been preserved: trenches, fortifications, underground shelters, memorial sites, military tombs, chapels..

The "Peace Trail" was inaugurated in 2007, connecting six open-air museums over 100 km, as well as the most important remains and memorial sites on the Soča front. From 2011 onwards, it was extended and a "Alpine Adriatic Peace Trail" was set up with the collaboration of the local authorities of Goriška Brda, the Karst region (Kras) and, on the Italian side, with some municipalities in the neighbouring Friuli Venezia Giulia region. It now extends 320 km to Trieste and includes many open-air museums. The principle remains, that of connecting the regions and people of the former Soča Front and raising awareness of the values of peace and common development.

The route starts in Log pod Mangartom, passes the Kluže fort, the Ravelnik open-air museums and Čelo. After the village of Drežnica, the road crosses the Italian ossuary and splits in two between Kobarid and Tolmin: one branch takes us to the open-air museum of Kolovrat, the other to that of Mrzli vrh. The two paths then lead to Nova Gorica on the Italian border.

Producing delicious cheeses for centuries, the Planika cheese dairy houses the "From the mountains to Planika" cheese museum. The heritage of the alpine pastures is presented with ethnological exhibits, documentary films and the reconstruction of the mountain building with all the milk processing equipment. The store offers the famous Tolminc cheese, as well as typical national handicrafts.

Miklošičeva Cesta leads from Prešeren Square, between the church and Galerija Emporium, to the bus and train stations. Most of the great architects of the early ^20th century, inspired by the Viennese Secession, contributed to the buildings that line this thoroughfare.

The Grand Hotel Union (1903), the city's best-known and most luxurious hotel, was the headquarters of the Soča Front High Command (World War I).

Opposite, at no. 4, the Caisse de Credit Populaire dates back to 1907 and proudly displays its white facade with blue checks. It was designed by Josip Vancaš.

At no. 8 stands the Vurnikova hiša, home to the Cooperative Bank.This surprising, strangely exotic building was designed by Ivan Vurnik in 1922. Helena Vurnik designed the geometric motifs. In the entrance hall, Janez Krek (1865-1917), priest and one of the leaders of the Christian social movement, is honored.

Miklošič Park (Miklošičev Park) between Dalmatinova Ulica and Tavčarjeva Ulica was the only park laid out during the Art Nouveau period, laid out by Maks Fabiani in 1902. The Krisper house (Krisperjeva hiša), designed by Fabiani, features delicate arabesque friezes on the second-floor windows.The Palace of Justice, from the same period, dominates the northern part of the square. On the western corner, the Čuden building (Čudnova hiša) is the work of Ciril Metod Koch, also responsible for the attractive Hauptmann building on Prešeren Square.

Accessible directly from Piazza Tartini, the interior of this church is only visible through a gate, which is quite common in Slovenia. Dating back to the ^13th century, the church has undergone several renovations, most recently by architect Pietro Nobile in the ^19th century. The nave, which reflects a certain bas-relief-briety, is architecturally harmonious. Take a close look at the statues on the altar representing Jesus Christ giving the keys to Paradise to Peter the Apostle.

The gallery exhibits works of Slovenian and international contemporary artists. The exhibitions are accompanied by programmes of events designed to increase public interest in contemporary art. It provides a pedagogical and thematic approach to the different orientations of this art, which is sometimes still controversial today. Before leaving, a detour through the garden is necessary with the discovery of the foundations of an antique villa with its mosaics, its heating system and the sewage disposal system still in operation.

Known as a creative urban centre, the Match Gallery - from its English translation - offers an innovative vision of art. The exhibitions of resolutely contemporary works are well worth a visit. Here, the speciality is rather ultra-contemporary arts such as audiovisual or performance. Her installation on the Place de la Révolution Française is a curious coincidence that she retranscribes through a culturally and politically committed program. The temporary exhibitions follow one another and change almost every month.

Housed in Coronini's baroque manor house, this museum showcases the valley's rich cultural, spiritual and memorial heritage. Not to be missed: the archaeological remains, the insistence on the central place of iron in the economy of the region in the Middle Ages or the very instructive zoom on the largely unknown municipal peasant revolt that took place in 1713. The original building was constructed between 1890 and 1892 to designs by Czech architects Jan Vladimír Hráský and Anton Hruby, in a neo-Renaissance style, while its striking facade was the work of sculptor Alojzij Gangl. Germans and Slovenes shared the building from 1892 to 1918. It was only after the Germans left in 1919 that Slovenian dancers, actors and musicians were able to perform there exclusively. The only square on the Slovenian coast to rival Piran's famous Tartinijev square! And yet, the Venetian style here seems quite austere. The cathedral was "baroqueized" in the ^18th century, as was the Praetorian Palace to the south of the square, formerly the town hall in the days of the Serenissima Republic. A museum opened in the fall of 2018 dedicated to the history of the famous Slovenian winter sports brand, Elan. It is nothing less than the first ski manufacturer in the world to open a museum to its glory. The chronological and thematic exhibition focuses on the innovations and diversification implemented by the brand. We follow the commercial epic of this company throughout the rooms. A beautiful escapade in perspective through the green valley of the Soča. From the village of Plužna, follow the signs to Virje. Little effort to make, in only a few minutes you are in front of this impressive karstic waterfall! The water is a delightful emerald green and the décor is conducive to relaxation and smiles. A superb alpine lake which is one of the most photogenic in the country. A statue of Zlatorog, the chamois from the popular legend preferred by Slovenians, watches over the site. Vipavski Križ is a beautiful village perched in the Slovenian countryside. It conceals small architectural treasures. Among them is a 17th century Capuchin monastery located right next to the old castle. It houses a grandiose library with 25,000 books on display, several thousand of which date back to the Renaissance. Castle built at the very beginning of the 14th century on a small hill that gives a nice view of the green region of Slovenj Gradec.
