FRANJA PARTISAN HOSPITAL

Museums

From December 1943 to May 1945, the gorges hosted a hospital built for partisans (Yugoslav resistance fighters). The health facility is named after Dr. Franja Bojc-Bidovec, who became Chief Medical Officer in January 1944. The 578 injured people who stayed here are blindfolded from the farm Podnjivč (opposite the current car park). The march in the waters was intended to avoid encountering German soldiers. This hospital had a very low mortality rate (13%). German troops, despite two attacks, never succeeded in bringing down this almost untraceable site. Nine French people were treated, but also Austrians, Italians, Poles, Soviets and Americans. The path along the river at the foot of the cliffs immediately brings you into the atmosphere: the further you go, the narrower the gorges. We finally saw the first barracks. It is not a museum in the conventional sense of the term but rather an immersion. We discover the barracks dedicated to the operating room, the radiology barracks, the quarantine room, the doctors' and injured people's room, the canteen, the dormitories covered with Yugoslav propaganda posters (you will be surprised by their number!), etc. At the bottom of the gorge, there is even a micro hydroelectric power station. It is a striking dive into the history and lives of these men in times of war. You will not leave this place completely unscathed.

IZOLANA - HOUSE OF THE SEA

Museums

Small museum dedicated to fishing and the relationship between the town of Izola and the sea. The permanent exhibition has been thoroughly revised recently. We learn a lot of things and the proposed route is very coherent. We first enter a first room that shares with us scenes of daily life after World War II in Izola where the sea is already omnipresent. The box on the necessary use of Slovenian wood in the construction of Yugoslav ships is very well done. Upstairs, one room is devoted to the work and legacy of the Italian geographer Pietro Coppo, who was responsible for the first map of the Istrian peninsula in the early sixteenth century, as well as for a puzzling attempt to map the world as a whole. The other rooms focus on the development of a local Istrian identity: with the role of the fish cannery and the Delamaris company in the regional economy, but also with the introduction of the famous Parenzana railway circuit that opened a major trade route in Central Europe in the 19th century. Well-designed educational workshops line the entire route: making knots, simulating a fishing boat in which you can sit... This museum is worth a visit as it is very well documented and offers a very good starting point for discovering the maritime town of Izola, less famous than its neighbors.

LAHINJA REGIONAL PARK

Natural site to discover

The intense blue Lahinja River has its source here. The many marshes and wetlands are home to a multitude of bird species. The park's emblem is a kingfisher. Many interesting natural sites: a karst cave called Zjot, beautiful hiking trails, etc. Several cultural sites are also worth a look: the medieval hamlet of Pusti Gradec or the bucolic promenade of Klepčev with its traditional sawmill. A calm and simple site like the Bela Krajina.

PRAETORIAN PALACE

Monuments to visit

Built in the 15th century, the Venetian Gothic palace fell into disuse several centuries after the fall of the Serenissima. Since 2001, major renovation work has given it a new lease of life, and it once again stands out on the famous Piazza Tito. A small marvel of architectural elegance, the historic building now houses Koper's town council, returning to its original function. Alongside the Slovenian flag, the Italian flag flies on the façade, in recognition of the Transalpine minority.

REGIONAL MUSEUM

Museums

The Counts of Celje are of particular interest in building Slovenia's identity, as evidenced by the inclusion of the three stars of the Counts of Celje on the national flag. The exhibition begins in the basement with a visit to Celeia, the "Slovenian Pompeii". The tour is structured around a walk through the ancient city with a very successful effect. The central location of the city on the European trade routes is thus highlighted. The first floor is full of remarkable tools from the prehistoric period. Children will be amazed by the exceptional fossil of a bear from ancient times. Parents will be made aware of the fundamental role of the pioneer of Slovenian paleontology Srečko Brodar. The second part of the exhibition is devoted to the political career of the Counts of Celje, the noble dynasty that gave its first autonomy to a large part of the Proto-Slovenian territory. The family tree will help you to better understand the family context and to identify the development of a powerful network of matrimonial alliances. The map of castles provides a number of indications of the princely power in the 14th century. The memorial that groups together the skulls of the Counts of Celje is striking. The museum is extremely well designed, the didactic content is very readable and the interest of the young public is real: children will be able to confront each other with a wooden sword or discover the content of classic meals in the Middle Ages.

REGIONAL MUSEUM OF KOPER

Museums

The museum is housed in the former Belgramoni-Tacco palace built in 1600, a beautiful building with showrooms. On the first floor you will see two Romanesque windows dating from the 9th and 12th centuries, with interlacing. On the second floor, the hall is dedicated to the church of Hrastovlje with its famous Dance of Death. Paintings of the Italian school are exhibited here. One painting depicts Koper/Capodistria in 1604, at that time still an island. The Empire furniture comes from the Maggiolini workshop. Sedan chairs are also exhibited as well as documents from the French period, one of which is signed by Bonaparte. The visit continues in an annex building with a historical presentation of the events in Istria after the attachment to Italy: Mussolini, fascism, oppression, the Second World War, deportations, the partisan struggle, all punctuated by Italian and Slovenian songs. The tragedy of a bicultural region is immediately revealed to us. However, we regret the relatively fresh reception, the overall lack of technical explanations and contextual elements which may jeopardize the general understanding of the permanent exhibition, as well as the great chronological and thematic mix which somewhat distorts the legibility and distribution of the rooms. The ethnographic collection is, on the other hand, very interesting to discover and reminds the visitor of all the influences - sometimes contradictory, sometimes concordant - of the city of Koper.

PROVINCIAL MUSEUM

Museums

The castle was bought by the commune in 1933. Five years later, the premises of the bastille, built in 1556, housed the first collections. The 17th century Loreto Chapel, the arcaded corridor, the four towers, the Knights' Hall and the rococo staircase were built under the orders of the Counts Khisli. The remains of the 3rd millennium BC can be visited on the first floor. The miniatures made are very interesting to better understand the evolution of the habitat during the prehistoric period. The second room offers a more condensed content on the period of Roman domination and the blossoming of the Slavic tribes in the 7th century. On the first floor, there is a presentation of the work from the glassworks and forges of Pohorje. The atmosphere is surreal in the loggia with Greco-Roman statues and Jewish steles from the 14th century when Glavni Trg comes alive with folk music during the Lent festival.

Afterwards, we visit the exhibition dedicated to the Middle Ages in Maribor. The rapid growth of the city and its great prosperity were disrupted by a period of untimely war and deadly epidemics. A beautiful perspective of religious plurality and a beautiful life-size reconstruction of a medieval settlement in a rural area. Finally, the modern part of the exhibition is more thematic and focuses on the pictorial representations of the city's elites as well as on the evolution of women's fashion between the mid-19th and late 20th centuries.

NAVY MUSEUM

Museums

Named after a great lieutenant of the Yugoslav navy of Slovenian origin, this museum, on the sea in general and not on Piran in particular, offers several developments on the equipment and technical aspects of the most emblematic Slovenian or Yugoslav ships. The part of the exhibition devoted to the strategic evolution of the pre-Slovenian navy is of high quality, as is the in-depth study of the Battle of Lissa in 1866, the first confrontation in the world to feature armoured ships. Nice popularization of the work of the engineer Gabriel Grüber.

BEACHES

Natural site to discover

There are a total of five beaches in the town, all free of charge, including one reserved for dogs and their owners. The central beach is the best equipped, with green spaces and a supervised swimming area in high season. Next door is the port beach, a pleasant place to walk along at any time of day. To the south is Simonov Zaliv beach, which is wilder with its small pebbles and crowded in summer. Finally, to the north of the town, you'll find the pretty but tiny Svetlinik beach, which is more rocky... For added comfort, a small mattress under your arm or in your bag won't go amiss.

NACE HOUSE

Museums

Established in the south of the town, in the hamlet of Pustal, this period house, bordered by the local river, dating from the 16th century, now houses a small local and ethnographic museum which gives a number of interesting insights into the objects and gestures of daily life in the days when Slovenia was still a Habsburg country. Restored in 1755, it was deliberately baroque. It is one of the few surviving examples of the last centuries in this region. A very appreciated visit by the locals!

This museum of architecture was created in 1972. The descendant of Plečnik, who died in 1971, left the city the legacy of the great architect. A stroll in this district of the capital, Trnovo, and a visit of the place is a must. A way to better understand this great creator, through his living and working environment, imbued with his presence. There is a collection of impressive models of the great man's innovative architectural projects, in Ljubljana of course, but also in Belgrade, Vienna and Prague. The square boasts two interesting houses. The Manzioli house (1470) with its Venetian-style windows, and the birthplace of Lovisato (16th century), a historical scientist who pioneered research into continental drift. Restored almost twenty years ago, the square is now home to the official Italian minority community. The town's oldest church, St. Mary's, dates back to the 11th century, but is rivalled by St. Maur's in terms of tourist interest.

The house is interesting because it bears the stigma of a bygone era. Built during the 16th century, a superb fresco depicting the creation of Eve proudly hangs on its façade. MUNICIPAL MUSEUM OF IDRIJA

Museums

In 1997, the museum was awarded the prize for Best European Technical and Industrial Museum. The castle was built in 1523. A fortress against Ottoman aggression, it became the headquarters of the mining administration until 1940. Its remarkable arcaded courtyard now hosts cultural evenings. Unequal quality of the permanent exhibition. The first part, located on the first floor, highlights extracts of local rocks and gems without providing any explanation in a language other than Slovenian. As you continue your itinerary through the museum, you fall in admiration for an impressive mineralogical and petrographic collection that also lacks context. The second part of the exhibition offers an intelligible and concise contextualization, in English, of the exploitation of mercury in the region through its discoverers, the working conditions it requires, its key personalities and its inexorable decline. This transition makes it possible to introduce a last floor of exhibition very rich in information about the 20th century in Idrija: the occupations it has undergone, the particular role of the supporters, the essential place of Idrija lace in the local heritage. The last rooms, where we must praise the effort of interactivity, allow us to get a more precise and global idea of the interest of mercury in our daily lives. As you will have understood, the visit is essential to better understand the specificity of Idrija.

MUNICIPAL MUSEUM (MESTNI MUZEJ)

Museums

The Municipal Museum in Ljubljana is one of the most electrifying museums in Slovenia and is well worth seeing. In recent years, this beautifully renovated palace has been offering a great multimedia experience for all ages. It retraces the history of Ljubljana in a clear and concise manner through permanent and temporary exhibitions. Inside the museum there is also a coffee bar and a bookshop. Much more than just another ordinary municipal museum, the Ljubljana City Museum offers an educational and chronological approach accessible to all history lovers. The basement displays the Roman remains of the former Emona. On the second floor there are chronologically arranged rooms that offer concise and intelligent analyses of the complex relationship between the city and its generations of inhabitants and rulers. This construction of a complex identity serves as a backdrop for Ljubljana's chronological progression and its promotion as a respected cultural and intellectual capital throughout Central Europe. The educational activities, aimed at a young audience, are a real success through an innovative question-and-answer game. The only regret: a rather light treatment of the contemporary period of Slovenian Ljubljana. Still, it is one of the most interesting museums in the country, especially for family audiences!

KOBARID MUSEUM

Museums

Mainly devoted to the front of the Soča (Isonzo, in Italian) and to the offensives launched in this sector by the Italian and Austro-Hungarian armies between 1915 and 1917. Located in the Mašera House, built in 1739, a building with Mediterranean and Alpine character, the museum was awarded the Valvasor Prize in 1992 and the Council of Europe Prize the following year. In the entrance hall, the intention of the authors is expressed from the outset. Man and his sufferings, whatever his origin, are placed at the centre of History. That is why the flags of the various peoples and nations involved in this tragedy are lined up side by side. In the halls, models of Mount Kern and the upper valley provide a better understanding of the advance and positioning of the troops. The dark room with its pictures of dead bodies is shocking. The white room retraces the soldier's fight against the natural elements, snow, ice, fog. Rommel (1891-1944), a future "desert fox" with his Afrikakorps in 1941, served as a lieutenant on the front line of the Soča. In his Diary, the sketches illustrate Mengore's three-day breakthrough into the Nadiža Valley. In the reconstructed shelter, you will listen to a recording of a letter from a soldier to his father. A 22-minute film projection in French allows us to "relive" the unfolding of these events, which had a terrible toll: 300,000 dead and 700,000 wounded! A monument of history.

NATURAL PARK OF THE SALTWORKS OF SEČOVLJE

Museums

Between Piran and Portorož, a landscape of ponds and derelict houses awaits the visitor. Three of these have been rebuilt, including the one housing the museum. A second has been renovated in keeping with the typical habitat. In its heyday, the area was home to 400 salt workers' houses. They were rented out from April to September. The men fished out of season. The salt harvest ended in 1960. However, the activity continues thanks to the museum and the estate, which has been a nature park since 2001. The museum is housed in a former salt-makers' house, next to a man-made canal. On the first floor is the salt barn. The two openings provided access to the canal and the salt pans.

The wooden container known as an albol was used to load 50 kg of salt, harvested after a fortnight or so, depending on weather conditions. The whiter the salt, the higher its price. On the second floor, the walls don't reach the ceiling. This allows air to circulate between the three rooms. Kitchen utensils and seals used to mark the origin of breads (there was only one oven for each family) are on display. Of particular note: the compass rose, indicative of a plant highly sensitive to weather variations.

Outside, head for a pretty mill that used to pump out the overflow of water. Today, it's a poetic summer cool-down for visitors. Birds love this wetland.

You can reach it by car before continuing on foot. The trail leads to Okrešelj (1,396 m) after a continuous ascent. It is possible to quench your thirst at the Slap Rinka Hostel at the foot of the waterfall until 10pm. The source of the Savinja River is located about 20 minutes upstream from the Rinka waterfall. Hiking boots are recommended to start the winding path that leads above the waterfall jump and continues via footbridges, ladders and boulders to the source. The final part continues through the woods. 15 minutes from the first source of the Savinja River, a panoramic relaxation break at the Frischaufov dom na Okrešlju hut at 1,378 m. It took an hour's good mountain walk to get there. The place is packed on the weekends. Meals are then taken from the backpack. As for the house, it offers hearty little dishes. The bravest ones continue towards Kamniško sedlo at 1,864 m. Count an hour and a half of climbing in addition. Laces first and a steep passage towards the end with a handrail. After the Rinka waterfall falls, the water disappears and then resurfaces, mixed with the water from the spring Črna, near the Kranija farm. When the rains are heavy, the waters of the waterfall remain on the surface and adopt a new name: Kotovec. La Savinja is truly born at the end of the Logar Valley. The Črna joins the Jezera, flowing from the Matkov Kot valley. From now on, the waters begin their course under the name of Savinja.

VERA VARDJAN

Crafts to discover

Stop right there! Vera Vardjan makes gudaloes, these terracotta pots covered with a membrane of pig's bladder. In the middle, a stick is placed in a small hole. You get a sound, different for each pot, by sliding your wet fingers along the stick. The instrument plays the role of an accompanying bass. Vera's grandfather used to make them. The place offers the opportunity to discover other artisanal products. A veritable Ali Baba's cave - literally and figuratively speaking - to find THE original gift!

POSAVJE MUSEUM (POSAVSKI MUZEJ)

Museums

The regional museum is housed in the Renaissance castle of Brežice. Originally a fortress designed to resist Turkish attackers, the castle became a palace in the Baroque period. Its frescoed hall, the largest in the country, is a masterpiece. The painter is said to have painted himself. The chapel and staircase are also painted. Scenes from Greek and Roman mythology abound. Classical music concerts are held here in summer.

The museum boasts an interesting archaeological collection, including a number of skeletons, such as that of an Illyrian soldier (500 B.C.) found in his tomb, complete with equipment and horse harness ornaments. In Dobova, 420 graves have been identified. In Roman times, Drnovo, near Brežice, was an important Roman settlement (4,000 inhabitants).

In the ethnological section, visitors can discover the life of the people of Posavje and their style of dress, thanks to the furniture, pottery and glass paintings on display. One room is devoted to viticulture. In the middle stands a klapotec, used to ward off birds. More recent history, too, is recounted at length through the deeds of the resistance. The museum also boasts the first translation of the Bible into Slovene by Jury Dalmatin in 1584, and a sledge belonging to Empress Maria Theresa. One room is dedicated to the work of Franjo Stiplovšek, who launched the museum in 1949.

HISTORIC TRAIL

Natural Crafts

The best way to discover the cultural and natural heritage of Kobarid is to take a 5 km tour of Kobariska Zgodovinska Pot. You can discover the moving war monuments, abandoned fortifications, bridges and amazing waterfalls around Kobarid. You can get a free map of the tour at the Kobarid Museum, or at the tourist office (in French). The latter highlights the best places to visit and the most beautiful views. Taking your time and appreciating each particularity, the tour lasts on average 3 hours and a half. Among the many points of this tour, you can appreciate one of the most attractive buildings in the region, the church of Saint-Antoine and the Italian ossuary surrounding it - a memorial opened by Mussolini in 1938 - visible from afar. The interest is inside: the bloody memories of the battle of Soča, with the names of the thousands of Italian soldiers who died on the front. Continuing your tour, you will also discover the old fort, Tonocov Grad and the Italian line of defence of the battle of Soča. This tour is not only historical but you can also admire the Soča valley and the 15 m high Slap Kozjak waterfall. Finally, Napoleon's bridge, Napoleonov Most, attracts attention for its view of the Soča and its rocky shores. Built in 1750, it inherited the French name, following a visit from Napoleon who passed through it. Guided tours are highly recommended.
