The history of the market of Barcelos begins in the 15th century. It was then an annual event. Today, it takes place every Thursday at the Campo da República. Despite the influx of tourists, it is a market that has remained rural and authentic. Farmers from the neighboring villages come to sell their products (food and handicrafts): pottery, crockery, lace, baskets... and the famous roosters. Noisy and colorful, this market is one of the most important in Portugal. Not to be missed to discover the atmosphere of a typical market, full of color and life.

MARCHÉ

The Loulé market deserves a detour, if only for its building with its atypical curves and colours. In addition to its oriental style, it has kept its original look in the alleys and colourful fruit and vegetable stalls. In addition to the fresh produce of daily life, there is a profusion of regional specialities such as fig cakes and home-made jams. Like many Portuguese covered markets, shops, butchers and estaminets surround the central part. All that remains is to let yourself be carried away by the atmosphere.

The covered market of Olhão consists of two red buildings of industrial architecture. One is dedicated to fish, which is sold daily by the fishermen, and the other to vegetables. It is not uncommon to see them grilling some octopus on the spot, to the delight of onlookers who find themselves immersed in the heart of the Portuguese popular expression. Don't hesitate to mingle with the shoppers who have come to stock up and take the time, like them, to savor a moment in one of the small cafés that line the square.

Every morning of the week, except Monday, come to the market of Nazaré, full of colors, cakes, fruits, vegetables, ham and of course fish. Before or after shopping, it is very pleasant to have a coffee while observing the local customs. Here you will mainly see women vendors, some of whom are still dressed in their traditional clothes and seven petticoats to protect themselves from the cold. It is typical and local. You should not miss this authentic market when you are in Nazaré

A beautiful white building with a clock tower on a small square: the municipal market comes alive every morning until 2 pm. Small traditional stores sell fruits, vegetables, cereals, meat, fresh bread and even flowers. The rest of the time, the municipal market is a kind of commercial center with a few stores to make purchases including a supermarket. It is also the meeting place of Faro's inhabitants, of all generations, who sit on the brick benches or pass by quickly.

MERCADO DO LIVRAMENTO

Market

If you're visiting or staying in Setúbal, we recommend a visit to the town's municipal market. Inaugurated in 1930, it was modernized in 2011. Inside, you'll find large azulejo panels illustrating the region's economic activities. Then take a tour of the stalls, especially the cheese stalls for the famous Azeitão cheese. You'll find it cheaper here than in Lisbon. Otherwise, you'll also find charcuterie and bakery stalls selling Alentejano bread to go with the cheese.
