CASA MÃE DA ROTA DE VINHOS
Read moreThe wine route of the "blue coast" reinforces the idea that the proximity of the ocean in this area between Setúbal, Palmela and Sesimbra, certainly contributes to the characteristics of the wines of this region of land of the Sado River. The reds of the Periquita grape variety, the whites of the Fernão Pires grape variety and, above all, the generous wines of the Moscatel grape variety of Setúbal (Muscat) constitute the main part of the production. The Muscatel de Setúbal, the most famous Portuguese wine after the Port and Madeira wines, with its exceptional ageing capacity, has been exported worldwide for centuries, once again thanks to its proximity to the ocean and the transport facilities it provides.
In Palmela, is the mother company of the wine route. It is located in a very well restored old wine cellar in the heart of the city. When you enter, you will first be surprised by the beauty of the building and its decoration. A magnificent ceiling height, highlighted by beautiful bordeaux-coloured suspensions of course. Here, we can give you all the information you need to explore the vineyards of the region. They make central booking, so you can both plan and book your visits at once, which is very convenient. They can also recommend local craft centres. In short, enough to explore the whole region! And if you don't have time to visit, you can also buy wine on site.

ESTUARY WALK
Read moreEasy hiking trail along the shoreline (if you don't have time to go to the reserve itself) which lasts about 2 hours while walking quietly. You will leave from the Canto do Pinheiro-Alcochete bus stop and return to the same point. Part of the way is in the village, then we arrive on the banks where we can observe the fauna and flora as well as some fishing boats. It is interesting to see the vegetation that makes up the marsh.
SADO NATURE RESERVE
Read moreA few kilometres southeast of Setúbal, the Sado Estuary Nature Reserve extends around the Sado River and Estuary. In its canals and marshes, there is still a very varied fauna: rare birds, herons, flamingos, mammals such as foxes, otters and dolphins... There will also be Roman remains, including bread ovens, on Pinheiro's property. The Romans had built a pottery factory there.
MONCÃO CASTLE
Read moreThe castle, now in ruins, was the scene of a historical episode: in 1368, when the Castilians laid siege to the town, a lady from the village gathered all the flour left in the starving town to make bread. She throws them to the Castilians to make them believe that the besieged still have plenty of provisions. The Castilians, duped, lift the siege and leave the city. The church of Santa Maria dos Anjos dominates the south of the Praça Deu-la-Deu and houses the tomb of the local heroine. Nice coffered ceilings and walls covered with azulejos.
