MERCADO DE ANTOJITOS

Market

At the entrance to the beautiful park Fuentes Brotantes, which is not far from the historic centre of Tlalpan, there are small restaurants of antojitos, which serve delicious or, cecinas de, and mushroom soups. An ideal place to eat well and not expensive, while taking a bath of nature, which we necessarily need, after a few days in Mexico City.

PANADERÍA JUAN BANANAS

Bakery

This is a great initiative: here, they don't pretend to make bread in the French way, but they adapt with local products. And the result goes beyond the borders of the state: the pan de platano (banana bread) has been simply exquisite since the 70s. The rest of the food is just as tempting, from the hearty muffins to the cookies to the plain bread. Everything is homemade, and hopefully the bread will be fresh out of the oven as you pass by. A great stop for a good breakfast or to refuel. Bravo!

CAFE LA YERBABUENA

Specialized coffee shop

Here, we know how to deal with Creole varieties. Two qualities of coffee are prepared here: the "normal" and the "gourmet". For the latter, the maestro first selects a few plants, then a few branches, then a few twigs from which he extracts the best beans... Thus, out of the 6 kilos produced by each selected plant, only 500 grams are reserved for this special vintage. A beautiful espresso machine, the only sign of contemporaneity, prepares a delicious little black coffee to be sipped in this little wooden hut overlooking the mountain.

CHURRERIA EL MORO

Bread cakes chocolates ice cream

Opened in 1935, this little establishment that doesn't look like much is a real institution in the city. People come here in the evening to enjoy different hot chocolates: the Spanish (thick and very sweet), the Mexican (lighter), the French (with vanilla), the special (semi-bitter), the Swiss (with whipped cream). But the place is best known for its soft and crispy churros. It has been so successful that Churrería el Moro now has eight other locations throughout the city, from Roma to Polanco to Zona Rosa.

NEVERIA Y PALETERIA LA FUENTE

Glacier

What better way to quench your thirst and face the heat of the peninsula than to enjoy a delicious ice cream? This is where you'll find the best artisanal sorbets and ice creams in the city, at La Fuente. Originating in Tocumbo, Michoacán (as do most of the country's ice cream shops), the great specialty is still chongos zamoranos ice cream , a fermented milk preparation invented in the convents of the colonial era. For purists: rose petal ice cream.

MERCADO HIDALGO

Market

The local market in the city is an interesting place for many reasons. First of all, you will find all the dishes and ingredients of the central Mexican cuisine. You will also see many Mexican immigrants who bring their children or grandchildren (who often don't speak Spanish) to discover the regional flavors of their childhood. A beautiful dive into the culinary problems of the border. Between the food stalls and the stalls of fresh fruit and queso, you will notice some craft shops.

They are now also made with a variety of ingredients such as almonds, walnuts, coconut, dates, etc. The other speciality is of course the huge and very thin tortillas de harina. The shop also sells regional cheeses and machaca (dried meat to be browned in a decoction of tomatoes and condiments).

MUSEO DEL DULCE DE LA CALLE REAL

A beautiful shop selling traditional local sweets, heir to the Palacio company, founded in 1840. Everything here is reminiscent of the porfiriato, the era that straddled the 19th and 20th centuries. You can visit a small museum of 5 rooms that traces the history of the manufacture of traditional sweets of the country and the region, from pre-Hispanic times to the present day: ates (fruit jellies) of membrillo (quince), guava, tejocote (hawthorn of Mexico)...

MERCADO 28

The biggest tourist market in Cancún: a whole block dedicated to the sale and marketing of all kinds of objects, which includes both pretty local handicrafts, and souvenirs probably of Chinese origin, which bear the inscription "Cancún" (coffee mug, T-shirt, pens, fridge magnets...). Some nice things to bring back: silver necklaces, cotton shirts, hammocks, paintings representing Mayan patterns... But prices are much higher than elsewhere, so don't hesitate to bargain.
