Soccer, the local passion

At the moment, and with an obvious lack of resources, Bosnian soccer is not very good at the international level, as can be Croatian soccer. Among the great names that have made the country shine, it is especially worth mentioning the legend Safet Sušić, who made the beautiful days of Paris-SG and the Yugoslavian national team in the 1980s. Vahid Halilhodić also deserves a special mention after a successful career as a player (Nantes, PSG) and coach (Rennes, PSG, Ivory Coast, Japan, Algeria ...). Today, it is the striker of Inter Milan Edin Džeko who wears the colors of the country high.

On foot or by bike, to the assault of nature

Hiking. All over the country, long walks on the high plateaus or in the large massifs are possible. Try hiking in the Bjelašnica Mountains. In general, avoid leaving the marked trails, as there may still be landmines.

The Via Dinarica is a hiking trail that runs along the Dinaric Alps for almost 1,300 km through 8 countries (Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Serbia, Kosovo, Northern Macedonia, Albania).

MOUNTAIN BIKING. The country's hikes are also possible by mountain bike. The Neretva canyons between Sarajevo and Mostar or the Vrbas canyon between Jajce and Banja Luka are, among others, grandiose walks. The countless lakes, often at high altitudes, can give you the pretext for a great tour of the country, such as Lake Modrac, near Tuzla, or Lake Boračko.

The Tans-Dinarica, like the Via Dinarica, allows, for the time being, adventurers in mountain bike to cross 3 countries (Slovenia, Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina).

Rafting and white water sports

Bosnia-Herzegovina is a country of medium and high mountains but also of rivers. It is three quarters mountainous and has an exceptional hydrology, and the karstic reliefs are favourable to white water sports. You will never be far from a majestic canyon where leisure activities are developing, with rafting in particular. If a good level is required in spring at the time of snowmelt, beginners will be able to enjoy themselves without any problem in summer.

First, head for Bihać in the north of the country and the Una River. It passes through the Una National Park, which is home to the very popular Štrbački Buk waterfalls. There, you can organize tours of one day or more at sites of great beauty. Also in the north of the country, Bania Luka and the Vrbas River also offer great options.

In the Sarajevo area, rafting tours are located above Konjic around the Neretva River and Lake Boračko, which nestles in a natural cirque. A little further down, near Foća, it is finally the Tara River, bordering Montenegro, which delights thrill seekers. Wilder, near the highest massifs of Bosnia, the Tara can be descended in two days with a possible accommodation in camp.

Skiing in the footsteps of Olympic champions

In winter, there are three main resorts for downhill enthusiasts. In Sarajevo, the two resorts of the 1984 Winter Olympics, only 30 minutes from the city center, are in operation. The Olympic resort of Bjelašnica, also called Babin Do, is located in the beautiful landscape of the eponymous mountain range. Today, you can enjoy quiet family skiing here. Otherwise, the largest resort in the country, the Olympic resort of Jahorina, in Republika Srpska, has been refurbished since the Olympic Games. It has 47 km of trails (including 10 km for cross-country skiing). In Central Bosnia, the ski resort of Vlašić, above Vratnik, is small (10 km of trails) but charming.
