LEMUR FOREST CAMP IALATSARA
Read moreOn the edge of the RN 7 from Fianarantsoa to Ambositra, 6 km before Ambohimasoa (60 km from Fianarantsoa), this private reserve of 600 ha deserves an extended stop. It is a happy alternative to the Ranomafana park because of the similarities in flora and fauna. Do not expect miracles, however: the reserve is much smaller and there are fewer animals. However, there is little chance of being disappointed: in view of the water-tornadoes that regularly hit Ranomafana, particularly in July-August, the chances of seeing animals are there, unfortunately, are often reduced.
To discover here: six species of lemurs (one individual per group is equipped with a transmitter necklace), including Hapalémur, microcèbes, or propithèque Diadema edwarsi, the second largest after indri. Also a variety of reptiles, Des, birds, and seven species of chameleon (the little pleased in the world, the brookesia)… In the flora, the orchids will seduce you. Many eucalyptus have replaced the primary forest, but it is still fairly well preserved.
One clarification: it is not the zoo in Vincennes; we are in moist forest, it rains many, and trails, although well released generally, are necessarily more or less muddy. Come equipped accordingly.
Novelty in 2009: a museum of Betsileo traditions and a botanical garden. Right of entry: 10 000 Ar. They discover cactées, delicious plants, plants endemic to the primary forest and medicinal plants. At the museum, traditional habitat and representation of Malagasy agriculture. Count one hour of visit. You can buy herbal teas and sweets from Mada's spices… and wood-fired bread!
Practical details to get there: by coming from Fianarantsoa or Ambositra, simply get off the bush taxi at the panel level (ask the driver). The problem arises from the start: You can try to stop the bush taxis that go on the road, but they are often already full.
In fact, it is less difficult to go to Fianarantsoa than to go north to Ambositra: The bush-taxis going to Tana go very early in the morning or during the night, which is impractical. A smart solution, however: Book seats in the bush-bush by telephone by the Lemur Forest Camp in particular. If not, take a taxi from Fianarantsoa. Finally, the last chance for adventurers: self-stop.
