Operas and theaters to visit France

Near the archeological museum you will find a well-preserved Gallo-Roman theater, the Théâtre du Virou. The building was built twice: in the first century first, then in the middle of the iie century, to create a larger space. We can still sit in the stands and admire the scene downstairs. In summer, performances are organized at the Festival des Mille-Aires. Costumed and masked troops like Gallo-Roman times replay pieces of ancient authors (Sophocles, Plaute). The current Opera was built on the location of the old municipal theatre destroyed by a fire on Wednesday, March 23, 1881. In 1882, the municipality decided to reconstruct the new theatre, it was François Aune, a nice architect and student of Gustave Eiffel, who was responsible for the project. The building has a traditional masonry envelope based on stone, bricks and lime, but inside, a structure of metal beams supports the enclosure. The decoration of the hall and the stage is the result of a compromise between the locales traditions, the growing influence of Francophiles, the aesthetic requirements of a cosmopolitan public. The decoration is magnificent, the ceiling, painted by Emmanuel Costa, represents Char du Soleil. The sculptures are from Raimondi and represent les Muses: Euterpe (music), Melpomène (tragedy), Thalie (comedy) and Terpsichore (dance). Inaugurated in 1885, it is a typical example of Second Empire style. In 1902 he took the name we know him today: Opera in Nice. The theatre was classified as a historic monument in 1993.

This neo-classical theatre bears the name of a th-century poet, whose statue can be seen in the hall. At the beginning of the th century, the place is a ballroom built by the architects Pierre and Louis Guidetti. The space will be built in theatre only in 1990, when the last theatre in the city closed its doors. Previously, there was a police station, a library and a conservatory of music. The site today welcomes the public for various shows: this year, weekends with jazz sounds and countless theatrical performances are on the agenda.
