This amphitheatre, full of secrets, is one of the oldest in Gaul
Built during the reign of Claudius around 40 AD, this amphitheater, full of secrets, is one of the oldest in Gaul. After having been used as a stone quarry in the Middle Ages, the arenas were in the process of being restored in the 20th century. In spite of the disappearance of the superstructures, the remains give a faithful image of what this amphitheater could have been in its heyday. Some of the objects discovered during excavations can be seen in the archaeological museum.

Amphithéâtre Gallo-Romain
Originaire de Saintes, j'ai revisité à nouveau ces arènes gallo-romaines, où, il y a quelques années se sont déroulées de nombreuses manifestations estivales: festival folklorique Les Jeux Santons (n’existent plus), cependant un groupe folklorique Saintongeais existe encore. Des concerts de musique classique, pièces de théâtre, opéra, compagnie Royale de Luxe de Nantes. Au cours de l'année, du printemps à l'automne, on peut découvrir des démonstrations de gladiateurs, de temps en temps. A découvrir ou redécouvrir en famille, avec des amis. A proximité, l'église de Saint-Eutrope, halte sur le chemin de Compostelle. Bonnes visites.

Magnifique amphithéâtre. Dépaysement total. La visite se fait en 45 minutes environ. Un lieu à faire obligatoirement.
