BOIZARD LOCKS

Works of art to see

More than 80 kilometres. It is the length of the canal Louis XIV wanted to create to feed Versailles with the waters of the Eure. This pharaoh project, several remains remaining in Eure-et-Loir, had to take its source in the commune of Pontgouin. It is in this area, somewhere in the forest surrounding the village, on the edge of the Boizard pond, that you can see the locks intended to regulate the flow of the river by creating water restraint in the valley. Seven other locations, between Pontgouin and Maintenon, were identified as crossing points of the unfinished Louis XIV Canal

THE CHURCH OF SAINT-PIERRE

Churches cathedrals basilicas and chapels

The church Saint Peter founded between the xiiith and the xvith century traces the history of Dreux with its numerous Reconstructions. Indeed, built at the beginning of the th century, it was then renovated at the fifteenth century after the damage caused by several invasions of the city. In the sixteenth century, a North tower was added to this church, with the South tower still mysteriously unfinished. The ultimate addition dates from the xviith with the construction of the southern arm of the transept. Its architecture recalls the flamboyant Gothic style, in the image of the cathedral of Chartres. If you have the opportunity to return to this sumptuous church you can admire the th and th century windows. And by getting closer to the choir, you will have the surprise of finding yourself faced with a gigantic organ that leaves its most beautiful notes at office time. But don't stop there. Go back and admire above the portal the th century flower. You can then continue your visit through the transepts, the nave, in front of the chapels, or in front of the crucifix. This building has been classified as Historical Monuments since 1840.

ST. PETER'S CHURCH

Churches cathedrals basilicas and chapels

Construite church, built in place of the castle of local lords from the th century, seems to keep memories of these feudal origins with its very surprising entrance. The door is surrounded by two surprising round towers that frame false windows, one of which contains a statue. Inside, a first paved space opens onto the church: at the bottom of the nave, a closed grid hides the altar. In front of this grid, niches contain white statues and, on the side, a black black throne. Just behind the church, a playground is open for children.

THE CHURCH OF OUR LADY

Churches cathedrals basilicas and chapels

This church of the th century has no attraction. Curiously at mid-slope, we discover it. It is composed of two naves attached. A beautiful Renaissance door (murée) overlooks the central span, at the time the door reserved for the lords of the place.

It is murée because a legend says that a châtelaine, fort, had so swollen once dead that it was impossible to pass it through the church by that door. Some inhabitants of the village would have liked to expand it, but the portal was imprisoned last night. It is said that she has been convicted so that she does not let the bad guys enter. The church Notre-Dame is classified in historic monuments. You must now enter the porch.

COURTYARD CASTLE

Castles to visit

Originally, the castle depended on the county of Chartres. One can think that it was rebuilt in the years 1530-1550 instead of a medieval fortress, for Jacques d'Avaugour. Thereafter, the Montmorency were the owners. Courtalain was transmitted by inheritance in 1862 to the Gontaut-Biron family who is still the owner. In this exceptional setting, a beautiful 29 th-century orangerie welcomes a conference and meeting area as well as a hotel with rooms. Single, double, triple or quadruple rooms, from 88 € per night for a double room. The atmosphere is authentic and friendly. A suite in the castle for 190 € at night. 8 € breakfast per person.
