Stokmarknes is located on the island of Hadseløya, in the Vesterålen archipelago, of which it is considered the "capital". The town is known as the birthplace of Norway's famous Hurtigruten cruise line. Indeed, the very first ship in the Hurtigruten fleet, the MS Finnmarken, was launched from Stokmarknes in 1893. Today, the town is home to the Hurtigruten Museum, which traces the history of this shipping line. This small town of colorful houses is surrounded by fjords, mountains and beaches. It's a favorite spot for observing underwater fauna, hiking and fishing.
