Travel Guide Zlokuḱani

This still fairly rural village is home to the archaeological site of Scupi, the Roman ancestor of today's Skopje. The name Zlokuḱani means "wicked" in southern Slavic languages. It comes from the dwellings built here during the Ottoman period. They were called "devil's houses"(zlite kukji) due to the frequent discovery during their construction of human bones from ancient necropolises, of which there are many in the vicinity. For example, 600 m from the Scupi archaeological site, towards the neighboring village of Bardovci/Бардовци, to the northwest, you can also visit an ancient necropolis on the right of the road. Some of the stelae have been straightened in a small cemetery surrounded by a wall in the middle of fields. By the way, we advise you to come to the Scupi site by car, as it is very poorly organized and may be closed. If this is the case, you can opt for another visit. The Skopje aqueduct is not far away, 3.7 km to the north-east, at Vizbegovo. Alternatively, you're also well placed to reach the superb Matka canyon.
