This 36,000 hectare private reserve is located about 50 km northwest of Mount Kenya. It was developed in the 1970s. The Saudi businessman Adnan Khashoggi - considered the richest man in the world in the 1980s - took part in it. The "Big Five" are obviously present, but the reserve makes it a point of honor to develop special programs for the preservation of wildlife. As for the northern white rhinoceros, of which it has the last two specimens (2 females) in the world. The last male, Sudan, died on March 19, 2018, at the age of 45. All breeding attempts have so far failed. The southern white rhinos were 34 in 2019. Black rhinos have had a better fate. The reserve had 20 in 1993. Their number exceeds one hundred today (140 in 2021). But the animal is still threatened with extinction on the planet. This is mainly due to poaching for their horn, which is widely used in traditional Chinese medicine. In order to protect them, Ol Pejeta has deployed no less than 150 rangers, including 40 highly trained and armed members of the National Police.Ol Pejeta also manages the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary, a refuge for chimpanzees. Native to Central and West Africa and often hunted for their meat, the chimpanzees find a place of refuge and protection here. The reserve can be visited by the day, and offers different types of accommodation, the most interesting of which are provided with a water point. Numerous outings are offered to discover one of the greatest animal diversities of East Africa. Ol Pejeta is also very proud to protect other rare or endangered animals, such as the wild dog, the imperial zebra of Grévy, the red hartebeest (a kind of antelope), or the cheetah.
