The reserve, located just south of Lewa, was established to safeguard the last remaining area of dense forest in the northern foothills of Mount Kenya. The aim was also to promote peace and coexistence between the different communities in the area - the Meru, Maasai, Borana and Kikuyu. The forest is maintained mainly by the local communities. Many animals live in this forest: buffaloes, wild boars, elands, guibs, reduncas, colobus, leopards and even some lions. It is home to beautiful waterfalls. A 500 m long suspension bridge allows a beautiful walk above the canopy. It is magical.
