Until the mid-1980s, the only people who entered this lost region in the northwestern part of the country - on the border with Guatemala - were loggers, marijuana growers or Mayan grave robbers. For the archaeological site of Chan Chich has been abandoned to its fate until an old road used for the extraction and transport of wood is rehabilitated. The archaeological area remains undisturbed since the only visitors to the site remain bats and howler monkeys, while the looters have long since taken the most precious objects out of the bowels of the Temples. The area is nevertheless favourable to exploration, since it is one of the most isolated in the country, promoting the development of wildlife. Some 15 kilometres of path winds its way through a virgin forest, allowing you to stroll in search of rare species. The archaeological site is not officially open to the public, but it is the responsibility of the magnificent Chan Chich Lodge. If you have the time - and the means -, a visit is essential.Gallon Jug Village and Estate is a private operation located on the lands of the country's former national natural resources company. There is an agricultural and livestock farm, an airstrip, a post office, a coffee processing workshop, a school, a small community of workers and a scientific research station that specializes in jaguars and tropical bats
