Founded in 1898, the original village of Talbingo was the birthplace of novelist Miles Franklin (1879-1954), after whom Australia's top literary prize was named. The village was moved in 1968 when the lake was created as part of the Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electric Scheme.Located in the mountainous area of the Kosciuszko National Park, about 42 km south of Tumut and 95 km north of Adaminaby, today's Talbingo is a picturesque little town on the edge of Talbingo Dam. It is a well-known recreation center in the Snowy Mountains where one can take part in many activities and visit the Talbingo Visitor Display Centre.
