The reserve is located between the San San River and Pond Sak Point in Almirante Bay. Its 17,000 ha of wetlands(humedal) are 5 km north of Changuinola. Protected since 1993, they are part of the La Amistad Biosphere Reserve since 1998. Their particularity is to constitute a natural ecosystem effective against erosion and floods, essential to the hydrological balance of the region. It is a refuge for many species of birds and animals that are difficult to see, such as themanatee, a large herbivorous aquatic mammal nicknamed "sea cow" that lives in the shallow coastal waters. Thehumedal has the largest concentration of manatees in Central America, but also otters, caimans, turtles, sloths... Tours through the mangroves, beaches and swamps are offered by the community organization AAMVECONA (www.aamvecona.com - +507 6547 7214 / 6679 7238) to observe the animals in an essential silence (tours not recommended with children). Rustic accommodation (10 US$ per person). Please bring mosquito and chitra repellent. Volunteers are welcome
