The summit of the Barú volcano is the highest point in Panama (3,475 m). It's one of the few places on the planet where the Pacific and Atlantic oceans can be seen from the same spot! But to get there, you need to arrive early in the morning and have clear skies, otherwise a sea of clouds awaits the hiker. The volcano, now dormant, is said to have undergone four eruptive phases in the last 1,600 years. The last eruption was around five centuries ago, at the start of Spanish colonization.Located in the Talamanca mountain range, Barú's isolation and altitude make it a true bioclimatic jewel, home to 220 species of birds and numerous endemic species, including orchids and a variety of wild blackberries. To protect these natural treasures, Volcán Barú National Park (14,322 ha) was created in 1976.
