The city of Mettmann, first mentioned in 904, has a population of nearly 40,000. It has a charming old town with beautiful half-timbered buildings and slate-covered houses, two churches, including the 12th century Saint-Lambert Catholic Church, many small shops, beautiful cafés and friendly restaurants. With its thousands of lights and more than 50 beautifully decorated huts and stands, its Christmas market in the market square, near the old church, is one of the most magnificent in the region. However, the main attraction is not in the city, but in the vicinity of Mettmann. The Neanderthal Museum is located in a wonderful natural landscape, with a vast network of paths, paths and streams. It was here, in the Neander Valley (in German: Neanderthal), in a stone quarry, in August 1856, that workers discovered 16 bone fragments, and a little later a skull cap. Johann Carl Fuhlrott (1803-1877), a local naturalist, found that these were parts of a skeleton of a prehistoric man (over 42,000 years old). A visit to the Neanderthal Museum and Valley is therefore a great opportunity to discover human history and to follow the evolution of man.
