The most populated city of the archipelago with 154,000 inhabitants, the capital has experienced an urban upheaval. Nowadays, it is a land of skyscrapers and giant shopping malls, and is a head-turner. Despite this, Manama has managed to preserve its authenticity: many neighborhoods, near the souk or in Al Hoora, have managed to resist the madness of height and have remained on a human scale. Unlike Saudi Arabia, cab drivers, waiters in restaurants and traders in the souk are all Bahrainis. Manama has preserved the traces of its history around the old souk of course, but also at Qal'At Al Bahrain, an archaeological site dating back to 2100 BC and classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2005.With such a rich past, Manama is the cultural destination of the Gulf. Manama is also a party town, with its bars and restaurants, most of which serve alcohol. Many Saudis come to Bahrain to party, which promises a memorable night.
