A historic site among all in Qatar, occupied by man for thousands of years, a very active pearling center, Al Khor today has the appearance of a "provincial town", the only one in the whole country. Territory of the Al Mohanadi Bedouins since at least the 18th century, this town of 20,000 inhabitants has the trappings of modernity, with its health center, its stadium and now its ultra modern mall. We go to the Corniche, nicely laid out on the edge of the lagoon and near which stand three watchtowers. An end of the world with its luxury hotel, like a rest camp for the gas engineers working twenty kilometers further north. For Al Khor is above all the livable back office of the Ras Laffan liquefied natural gas city, linked to North Field, the largest gas field in the world on which Total operates. A few kilometers away, you can discover the natural mangrove of al-Dhakira, a biotope of trees that branch out into the ground, typical of maritime marsh areas. A remarkable, fragile and precious ecosystem that shelters a rich biodiversity. The mangrove would be both a sink for atmosphericCO2 and a source of carbon. Al Khor is located about an hour away from the Doha Corniche. You can either leave the capital by highway 1 and then turn right on highway 14, or you can take the other northern exit of Doha at the level of The Pearl, following Lusail Rd which becomes the 1A expressway, closer to the coast than the axial highway.
