Tarout is a small island located opposite Qatif, about 30 km north of Dammam. Archaeological excavations have documented traces of habitation dating back to 5,000 B.C., making it one of the oldest occupation sites on the Arabian Peninsula. In the 3rd millennium B.C., Tarut was the capital of the kingdom of Dilmoun. The city also occupied an important place in the commercial exchanges between Mesopotamia and the coastal cities of the Peninsula. The island is now linked to the city of Al-Qatif by a bridge. It has a population of 77,000. Its main tourist attraction is its fortress.
