Al-Jubail is an industrial city of nearly 700,000 inhabitants, located 100 kilometers north of Dammam. In 1975, the city was still a small fishing village when the Saudi government decided to transform it into a vast industrial zone, mainly focused on petrochemicals. The city became part of Saudi history when in 1933 the first team of geologists came to probe the country's underground. Like Tarout, the site of Al-Jubail had also been chosen by the Dilmun kingdom to house a colony and control trade between Mesopotamia and the southeastern Arabian Peninsula.
