450 km northwest of Itanagar. Tawang, at an altitude of over 3,000 m, is mainly inhabited by the Monpa minority, descended from the same lineage as the Lepcha people of Sikkim and the Drukpa of Bhutan. The town is home to what is often considered the world's second-largest Buddhist monastery after Lhasa in Tibet: the superb Gelugpa monastery of Tawang. Founded by Lama Lodre Gyatso in the 17th century, it stands proudly on a hill at the top of the town. This northern border region, Tawang, is still claimed by China as part of the Tibet Autonomous Region.
