Much wilder and less frequented than the west, the eastern region is bordered by magnificent landscapes that seem never to have been trodden by human foot. Lhuntse, the flagship town of the east, is a peaceful little village where women are busy weaving a textile called Kishuthara. A visit to the dzong is a must. It's a grandiose site, set on a hill overlooking the Kurichu River in all its splendour, since 1654, where once stood an old temple dating back to 1552. Today, the dzong is the district's administrative and religious center. It takes over 2 hours to drive from Monga to Lhuntse.
