The road from Trashigang takes in imposing scenery, criss-crossing fields of corn, potatoes and prayer flags. The road climbs as far as Kanglung, an important town and home to the country's only university. The houses, typical of the east, are made of adobe or stone, and the roofs are covered with large mats of woven bamboo. The descent to Samdrup Jongkhar and the plain is abrupt, as is the change in vegetation. This city is like any other border town, very busy with lots of road traffic. Since the end of 2008, tourists have been allowed to enter and leave via the eastern border at Samdrup Jongkhar. Don't forget that crossing this part of Assam requires an Indian visa, which should preferably be obtained in France before departure, by e-visa or in Kathmandu at the Indian embassy. The border town on the Indian side is called Darranga.
