35 km from Tezpur. Part of Nameri National Park lies in the Sonitpur district of Assam state, and the other small part in Arunachal Pradesh. The best time to visit the park is from November to March. The nearest railway station is Rangapara in the south, just 21 km from the park, and Bhalukpong in the north, 60 km away. This national park, which is also a tiger reserve, extends over 800 km² in the middle of a densely wooded region in the foothills of the Himalayas. It is bordered by the Jia Bhoroli River, a tributary of the Brahmaputra River. Formerly named Naduar Forest Reserve when it was created in 1978, the reserve was renamed Nameri Wildlife Sanctuary in 1985, became a National Park in 1998 and became part of a Tiger reserve in 2000. It is home to a number of endangered animal species, including the Himalayan black bear, the lippu bear, several cat species (Bengal tiger, Indian leopard, clouded leopard, marbled cat and leopard cat), hooded langur, wild boar, muntjac... Elephants are present in large numbers, usually travelling in herds, and are even regularly spotted outside the park boundaries, close to settlements. The area is best known for its birdlife. The buffer zone around the park has been degraded since the late 1990s; large-scale deforestation is a direct threat to the tiger population.
