population: 957,352. The capital of Assam is not only the largest city in the state, but also in the "Seven Sister States". It's a classic Indian city, chaotic but seductive. It lies between the south bank of the legendary Brahmaputra River and the hills of the Shillong Plateau. It's a must-see on any tour of the North-Eastern states, as it's the city with the best connections to the rest of the country (airport, railway station, buses). The city is renowned for its Hindu temples, the most important of which is Kamakhya, located some ten kilometers south of the city, a tantric center dedicated to Kali, where pilgrims venerate the goddess's yoni, the female counterpart of Shiva's lingam, for which human sacrifices were offered until the 19th century. Boat trips on the fascinating Brahamaputra River are also possible. Whether you're visiting Assam, trekking in Arunachal Pradesh or taking a cultural break in Nagaland, you're bound to stop here.
