Northeast of the Lower Peninsula, in Glen Arbor (though the visitor center is in Empire), lies a protected area of great beauty, well known to Michiganders: the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. Administered by the National Park Service, this little piece of paradise of forests, beaches and dune formations welcomes over a million visitors every year. In 2017, Sleeping Bear Point was named one of the 21 most beautiful beaches in the world by National Geographic, no less.
