Ukulhas is one of the local islands of Ari Atoll. Located in the northern part, it is specialized in yellowfin tuna fishing. A strong complicity binds the villagers together and this can be felt. The island has been inhabited since ancient times as evidenced by the Kudamiskiy mosque built in 1656. It is an important center of Ari Atoll and its infrastructure is relatively developed. It has a hospital and a school. On the other hand, there are only a few shops and the inhabitants are obliged to go to Malé, 72 kilometres away, to buy basic necessities. A beautiful white sandy beach in the south of the island is reserved for travellers and bathing suits are allowed. Excellent diving and snorkeling spots encircle the island. However, it remains reasonably developed for tourists and has only a dozen hotels and guest houses.
