The stopover city of Shingu is surrounded by sea, mountains and rivers. Located on the east coast of the prefecture, Shingu is an important landmark for travelers moving to the southern part of the Kii Peninsula. It serves the pilgrimage routes of Kumano Kodo and Kumano Hongu Taisha. But of course one goes to Shingu to visit the Kumano Hayatama Taisha, one of the three sacred destinations of the pilgrimage routes. Bordered by the Kumano River, this vermilion shrine is also home to an 800-year-old sacred conifer, considered the largest of its kind in the entire archipelago: the Nagi no ki.
