Located south of Osaka, the city of Sakai is a real breeding ground for talented craftsmen. We can mention, among others, its famous knives, its carpets, its bicycles, its incense or its potteries. The clustering of craftsmen in Sakai is explained by the presence of large tombs(kofun), whose construction required their know-how since the 3rd century. This unique heritage, inscribed since 2019 on the Unesco World Heritage List, is another must-see in the city. Sakai is also the birthplace of Sen no Rikyu, Japan's greatest tea ceremony master. The rich history of the city is very interesting. Don't miss the Sakai Museum of Traditional Arts, a must visit to learn more about the city's handicrafts, especially cutlery, and to make some nice purchases.
