Consisting of some 4 600 small hamlets, Villarcayo (inhabitants) is the capital of the Merindades region. It is crossed by the Helps and Trema rivers, the tributaries of the Ebro River. Classified "Cultural interest", the city retains an interesting architectural heritage which distinguishes itself from the Plaza Mayor and its beautiful illuminated fountain, the th century Torre del Reloj, the monastic houses of Santa Marina Street, or the church Santa Marina (th century), which clearly displays Gaudí's influence. Since the th century, the city has been celebrating its weekly market every Monday.
