The historic village of Lewiston is a very important place in the history of slavery in the United States. The slaves escaping from southern states in the 1840 s borrow a network of clandestine roads called Underground Railroad and arrive until Lewiston, the last stop before freedom. Because this small village is located on the edge of the Niagara River separating Canada from the United States. At that time, the abolitionists who live there hide the slaves who were stranded in their homes and in the middle of the night, helping them cross the river on small boats to reach the Canadian shore that promised them a better life. The Bronze Crossing monument erected in 2009 on the shore of the village accurately portrays this scene.
