It was in July 1944, in the Mount Washington Hotel, that the Bretton Woods Agreement was signed. The aim was to define a lasting international monetary and financial system in the wake of the Second World War. Although 44 nations were represented, the United States came out on top: at the end of the conference, currency parities were fixed in relation to the gold standard, and the dollar became the reference currency, convertible into gold. The World Bank and the International Monetary Fund were created. Today, the small town is the starting point for climbing Mount Washington or visiting Crawford State Park.
