Islamabad (city of Islam or city of peace) is often compared to an American suburb. It is a modern and carefully planned city, which does not resemble any other metropolis in South Asia. It is not devoid of interest, nor does it have the "soul" nor the energy that Karachi or Lahore can have, for example. Islamabad remains a very pleasant city, relatively unaffected by the violence that bloodshed the country. The last major terrorist attack took place on 20 September 2008. An attack on the Marriott Hotel resulted in the deaths of 55 people. In 1958, Islamabad was chosen as a new capital to replace Karachi. More central, closer to the army headquarters (located in Rawalpindi), therefore better protected, the city seemed more suited to the function. Its construction began in 1960. Under the direction of a Greek architect, a triangular shaped city has gradually taken shape over what was only a vast steppes. Today, Islamabad houses government institutions and is inhabited by many diplomats and members of ngos.
