Khewra salt mines are the second largest in the world. Nearly 400 000 tons of salt are produced every year! According to legend, they were discovered in 326 BC by Alexander the Great. The King of Macedonia and his troops would have stopped there during their long march through Pakistan. They would then see their horses lick the stones and, in turn, essayant that they were extremely salty. Today, mines have 19 levels, and tunnels and tunnels are spread over 40 kilometres. The main tunnel, at ground level, has been designed for tourists. You can explore it on an old train of the 1930 s or on foot. The salt caves house some sculptures and unusual constructions, such as a mosque built with light salt bricks of different colours or a statue of the great poet Mohamed Iqbal carved in Salt. At the end of the course (approximately 1 h 30) there are a cafeteria and a souvenir shop. You can take what picnic and install in the surrounding hills.The site is open daily from 9 am to 18 pm.
