With correct hotels and shopping districts, the capital of Azad Kashmir is the most developed place in the region in terms of tourism. Yet the city was devastated by the terrible earthquake of 2005. The epicentre of this disaster, which claimed the lives of more than 73 000 people, was only a few kilometres away. Muzaffarabad is encircled by the river Neelum, which rolls down and forms an arc around the city. Many hiking trails cross the city and offer breathtaking views.
